Digital Dozen Day 5: Stripes and hearts nail art

Friday, February 13, 2015

Today is Day five - the final day - of the Digital Dozen Patterns on Patterns theme. Being a part of the Digital Dozen has challenged me to try different ideas and designs. Of course, don't be surprised to see a lot of floral designs mixed in when ever I get a chance.

Today is a different look for me. I used the black Esmaltes Da Kelly tinted polish from the Soap Bubbles collection for my base color. These polishes are translucent, which is what makes it great to use them in nail art. But it's the first time I have used one in a base color. I used two coats so it wasn't too sheer. Then I added black lines using Colors by Llarowe "Vincent." Fancy Gloss "A Sailor's Love" was used to create the hearts.

I love the way it turned out. It was extremely hard to capture in photos though. But I recommend the technique. The opacity difference of the polishes make it interesting - and the pop of red added a bit of flair.

Love Letter nail art with OPI

Saturday, February 8, 2014

When the OPI Brazil collection came out, I knew I had to have it. I started swatching them and then realized the collection had the perfect shades for a nail art idea I had. So, needless to say, I still need to swatch them. But I have a cute little mani to show for my brief moment of distraction.

I used OPI Don't Bossa Nova Me around for the base color, and Kiss Me I'm Brazilian and Red Hot Rio for the hearts.

I love the hearts over the newsprint. Love letters from OPI perhaps?

I had to show you my wedding ring set also. It has a gorgeous heart shaped diamond that fits the mani. My husband proposed to me on Valentine's Day a few years ago. (Okay, so it was 29 years ago.)

To get the newsprint effect paint your nails in a light shade. When they are dry (don't use top coat) wet your nail with rubbing alcohol and place a pre-cut piece of newspaper over the nail and press down for about 15 seconds. I also use a cotton ball that has been dunked in alcohol and hold that over the top of the newspaper - it ensures the paper is soaked. Make sure you don't move the newspaper piece after it is on your nail. Peel the paper off and you have newsprint nails!

What are you going to wear on your nails for Valentine's Day?

These polishes were purchased by me. All opinions are my own. Please note that computer monitors and mobile devices may show colors differently.

Valentine's nail art with tutorial

Thursday, February 6, 2014

This last has been a busy week. So many giveaways and wonderful happenings. But I wanted to take a minute and share some nail art with you. I have a cute little Valentines Day mani and a tutorial for you.

Let's take a look. And yes, I love Tweety Bird!

I started with a base coat of Zoya Purity. It's a great white polish that works wonderfully for nail art. Then, using a striping brush and blue acrylic paint I added diagonal stripes.

I used a dotting tool and Zoya Purity to add white dots on the lines to break it up into small broken lines.

Then use a dotting tool to add dots for the top part of the hearts. I alternated purple and pink between the diagonal lines.

Use a nail art brush to connect the hearts. Just paint a stripe down from each outside part of the dot and bring them together into a point at the bottom. It's actually pretty easy when you break it down into steps!

Valentine's Day mani - holo hearts

Monday, February 11, 2013

I hope you are enjoying the Valentine's Day posts. I hope these are giving you some ideas for you Valentine's Day mani.

For this mani I used a base color of OPI Chick Flick Cherry. I let it dry and then used a dotting tool, a MASH Nail art brush (I used the angled brush and honestly don't know how I ever made it without it.) and Color Club Halo Hues Harp On It holographic polish to apply the hearts.

Hearts are relatively easy to paint. Use a dotting tool to make two dots next to each other. This forms the top of the heart. Use a nail art brush to paint from the sides of the dots to a center point and fill in with polish.

I applied a top coat with Seche Vite and the look was complete.

Valentine's Day mani - Bouquet of hearts

Sunday, February 10, 2013

Sometimes I struggle with coming up with creative ideas. Especially when it needs to fit a theme. I tried to come up with a Valentine's Day theme. I thought I would try a bouquet of hearts.

I started with a gradient using Barielle Alli's Lace Cover up and Young 'N in Love. Barielle polishes are a favorite of mine. They have a great formula, wonderful application and superior colors.

Then I added stems using Barielle Central Park. The hearts were created using a dotting tool and a nail art brush and Barielle Big Apple Red. I added a few lines for "ribbons" around the stems using Barielle Gold Digger. Big Apple Red has a jelly-like consistency so it does allow the other colors to show through. If I had to do it again I would add another coat for the hearts.

This is a different look than I usually wear. What are you going to wear on your nails for Valentine's Day?

Valentine's Day - Matte about it

Saturday, February 9, 2013

I decided to do a Valentine's Day mani to enter for a contest Barielle is holding. While I don't like the "like to win" contests I do like to enter to challenge myself.

I decided to try something different for me and do a matte base. I actually like it and it dried quicker than I thought it would. I used Barielle Lindsay's Dancin' which is a vibrant shimmery red. Then I applied Butter London Matte top coat.

I made gold hearts with a dotting tool and a MASH Nail art brush. Then I made smaller hearts inside the gold hearts with Lindsay's Dancin'. I added some white dots with Barielle Young 'n In Love.

Valentine's Day is the day my husband proposed to me. Oh my, it is hard to believe it will be 28 years in just a few days. So hearts were fitting. What are you going to put on your nails for Valentine's Day?

My Valentine's Day mani. "Cross your dots"

Sunday, February 12, 2012

I wanted to do something fun for Valentine's day. So I used a bright red Color Club polish (Sorry, it doesn't have the name on it.) and China Glaze "White on White."

I started off with two coats of the white and used a coat of Seche Vite. Then I used scotch tape to make a straight line and applied the red. I topped that off with a coat of Seche Vite again.

I wanted to use dots but I don't have a dotting tool. After doing some research on the web I found several ways to make my own. I decided to use a straight pin and a pencil.

I simply stuck the pin in the eraser.
Then I dipped the pin in a dab of polish that I had ready. Make sure you dip it straight. Then it was just a matter of dabbing my nails. One dip in the polish let me do four or five dots on my nails.

Apply a coat of your favorite top coat and Voila!

Happy Dotting!
