Digital Dozen Day 5: Stripes and hearts nail art

Friday, February 13, 2015

Today is Day five - the final day - of the Digital Dozen Patterns on Patterns theme. Being a part of the Digital Dozen has challenged me to try different ideas and designs. Of course, don't be surprised to see a lot of floral designs mixed in when ever I get a chance.

Today is a different look for me. I used the black Esmaltes Da Kelly tinted polish from the Soap Bubbles collection for my base color. These polishes are translucent, which is what makes it great to use them in nail art. But it's the first time I have used one in a base color. I used two coats so it wasn't too sheer. Then I added black lines using Colors by Llarowe "Vincent." Fancy Gloss "A Sailor's Love" was used to create the hearts.

I love the way it turned out. It was extremely hard to capture in photos though. But I recommend the technique. The opacity difference of the polishes make it interesting - and the pop of red added a bit of flair.

Make sure to take a look at the other amazing Pattern on Pattern looks by the talented ladies of the Digital Dozen.

Say it with daisies - nail art

Monday, December 29, 2014

Today's post is more floral. Have I mentioned before that I love floral nail art? I don't think I have... Just kidding. You gals know that I love floral nail art. This time of year I start getting antsy for warm weather. (Yes, I know there are months of bitter cold temperatures to come. But a girl can dream.)

Winter daisies - floral nail art

I started off with a base color of Fancy Gloss Dark Chocolate. (You can see the initial review of Dark Chocolate and some more creme Fancy Gloss polishes here.) Dark Chocolate is a gorgeous dark chocolatey brown that dries to a high gloss shine.

Winter daisies - floral nail art

Then I used acrylic paints to create the daisies. I used a very pale green, white, orange and brown paint. I started by making a dot of orange everywhere I wanted the center of a daisy to be and then I created the petals with the light green. I applied a thin stripe of white to each petal.

Winter daisies - floral nail art

Then using a dotting tool with both orange and brown on it, I created the center of each daisy. Actually very simple, but time consuming.

The brown complements the daisies very well I think. It's perfect for a winter floral mani.

Holiday - or any day - plaid nail art

Thursday, December 4, 2014

I have some fun patterned nail art for you today. It's a saucy plaid and it's perfect for the holidays or any day. Change up the colors or the amount of stripes if you want a completely different look.

I completely enjoy creating nail art. I completely focus on the task at hand and forget everything else. Which isn't the best thing when you are trying to potty train a puppy. Yes, there is a new critter at the Set in Lacquer household - meet "Cricket." That sweet little innocent face manages to keep me hopping!

But I digress, back to the nail art.

I love patterned nail art - argyles, plaids, stripes, dots... the possibilities are endless. But this time I knew I wanted a red plaid with small gold stripes in it. So I set to work.

Plaid nail art

I used Fancy Gloss "A Sailor's Love," Zoya "Willa" and Colors by llarowe the gold from the "Silver and Gold" duo.

Plaid nail art

Two coats of A Sailor's Love provided the rich red base. Then I used a striping brush and added black stripes with Willa. Small stripes of the gold polish gave this plaid nail art the festive appearance I was striving to achieve.

Plaid nail art

I topped it off with a top coat of HK Girl to seal off the design and to provide a high-gloss finish.

What do you think about this festive plaid? Patterns are timeless.

Branch out with easy holiday nail art

Wednesday, December 3, 2014

It's been a week of holiday nail art so far. Why am I posting it so early? Basically to give you ideas for quick and easy nail art.

If you're like me, you see something and want to recreate it... but with your own twist. So for today's holiday nail art I created a easy, yet almost three-dimensional Christmas tree on an almost starlit base.

Let's take a look.

I started out with two coats of Fancy Gloss My Sailor. This shade has become my "go to blue"polish.

Christmas tree on a starry night nail art

Then I added a coat of Dance Legend 607 top coat to add a sparkle that would appear as a quiet, starry night.

I used a acrylic paints to add the base of snow and the tree. Gray paint was added first. Then, using varying shades of greens I created the tree. I added some white paint for the flocking effect and different colors of paint for the decorations. I had some metal star-shaped studs so they were perfect for the topper on the tree and as an accent on the other nails. I topped it off with a coat of HK Girl to seal in the design and add lots of glossy shine.

Who knows what I will come up with for the next holiday nail art. Sometimes it is hard to come up with something that I a.) actually think I can pull off and b.) is remotely creative.

In the meantime, feel free to post your holiday inspired nails on the Set in Lacquer Facebook page.

Fancy Gloss Polish - glitter, thermal and holos... oh my!

Monday, October 6, 2014

I have some fun indie polishes to share with you today - Fancy Gloss Polish. She creates some stunning polishes and I like them more and more with each polish I try. Yesterday, I posted the creme polishes and you can see those here. Today I have the glitter, thermal and holographic polishes to share with you.

The formula is amazing. They applied evenly and smoothly. I used two coats for each swatch. These swatches are shown without a top coat unless I mention differently. The shades are stunning and are perfect for any season. But are especially perfect for the fall season. Let's take a look at the swatches.

Blue Lagoon is a deep blue holographic polish. It shines with a dazzling array of greens. The holo shimmer in this one seems to come from within and adds tremendous depth. Application was wonderful. I probably could have gotten by with only one coat. But the camera seemed to need two to show it at its best. I had no application issues with this polish.

Chocolate Muffin is a holographic deep rich mahogany brown with a strong bronze shimmer. It is gorgeous. And again, it has the "lit from within" shimmer.

Here it is in artificial light.

Little Red Dress is an amazing holographic red polish. You know how they say every gal needs a little red dress in her wardrobe? Well the same goes for this stunning red holo.

Here is it in artificial light.

Marry Me is a stunning, classic glitter topcoat. It has a ton of silvery white hex glitters and holographic micro glitters. It applies evenly and smoothly. I love when glitter rests completely flat against the nail.  I have it on here over Dark Chocolate. I had no application issues with this polish.

Koi Fish is a thermal. Have you see Koi fish in a pond? Their colors are so vivid and bright. This polish is spot on. It turns a bright coralish orange when it's cold. And a soft warm white with a slight pink tinge when it is warm. It is packed full of iridescent flakies which remind me even more of those flashy fish. There is a photo on the Fancy Gloss page that shows it with the orange on the nail beds and white on the tips. It's so amazing! But I have extremely warm hands and I couldn't replicate that look.
