Mixology 101 - Experimenting with polishes

Sunday, September 30, 2012

Mixology - I don't call it frankening or developing an indie. Both of those involve starting from scratch and require an immense time commitment. Making a polish from scratch is hard work and a science. It is something I will leave to the experts.
But I do like to play around with mixing polish - or mixology. It's kind of like using a ready-made box cake mix and adding to it. I sometimes mix polishes together and add sprinkles. Indie makers start from scratch with special ingredients and "sift flour." I have a huge respect for those individuals and I love the polishes. But sometimes I find myself with small portions of polishes and have a desire to mix and create something with them.
Here is another of my mixology experiments. I made a few of these and sent them to friends as I was relatively pleased with how it turned out. As I said - I make them for fun and it is simply mixing off-the shelf polishes and adding glitz.

This is a wonderful black polish with tons of microscopic glitter that are bursting with prisms of color. I topped it off with Dazzle Dry top coat. It is a super glossy top coat that dries to a rock hard finish within minutes.

Zoya Natty and FeiFei make a great gradient

Saturday, September 29, 2012

Zoya - It's a name that makes most nail polish lovers sit up and take notice. The Designer and Diva 2012 Fall collection are typical of the wonderful quality of Zoya.

For this gradient I used Zoya Natty as the base color. Then using a cosmetic sponge I applied Zoya FeiFei on the tips for a classy gradient.

Zoya Natty is a wonderful smoky deep steel blue with an opaque cream finish. Quite a stunning and fashionable color. Zoya FeiFei is a medium steel blue base with heavy gold, blue and pink iridescent metallic sparkle. The sparkle in this color is not to be overlooked.

These colors are spectacular together.

Illamasqua - Generation Q swatches

Thursday, September 27, 2012

I recently purchased two polishes from the Illamasqua Generation Q collection - Charisma and Creator. I am excited to share them with you.

"Generation Q is a clear message to everybody, everywhere that beauty is not young, old, black, white, male or female, but anything, everything and everyone," - Illamasqua website.

I love these polishes. The formula is phenomenal. Both polishes applied wonderfully and the dry time was pretty speedy.

Charisma is a gorgeous shade of berry wine. It has a generous amount of shimmer added to it. The first coat makes you wonder how many coats it will take. But amazingly the second coat provided an fantastic opaque finish. I didn't use a top coat on these swatches.

Creator is a jet black base with small multi size silver glitter. Again as I was applying the first coat it looked pretty sheer. The second coat provided wonderful coverage with lots of silver glitz. No top coat is used on these swatches.

Zoya Monica and Daul work well together

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

I was trying to decide on what polishes to wear. As I was perusing my collection I noticed Zoya Daul and Monica. Very complementary colors. So I gathered my thoughts and came up with a plan.

I started with a base color of Monica. It's a very creamy plum shade. Then I added a swirl of Daul down the side of each nail. The wine/purple shade with lots of gold glimmer added an element of depth. I wanted to do one more thing. So I grabbed Zoya Richelle and made two swirl stripes. The completed nail art looks great in person. It was very shy on camera. But I think you will get the picture. The gold in Richelle wanted to be close to the gold in Daul. But if you look close you can see the differences.

I like this mani. It has an glitzy look to it.

Color block nail art using Milani

Milani asked some bloggers to use Milani polishes and participate in a promotion involving nail trends. I happily said yes. I love nail art and all things involving polish.

One of the nail trends is color block My version of "color block"is below. I was going to use scotch tape but I decided to use a nail art brush instead . I used "Rapid Cherry" for the base color and then using the nail art brush I added the square using Black Swift and White on White. I outlined each square with "Gold Glitz." It probably could have been neater if I had used scotch tape but I lost patience.

Sheswai "Rootsy" perfect for Fall season

I received a lovely polish to share with you. I have tried one Sheswai polish previously and the formula was amazing. This one was just as wonderful and the color is fantastic.

Sheswai Rootsy is a marvelous autumn color. The color reminds me of the shade of Henna. It's a rich caramel brown with red undertones. Two coats were all I needed on this amazing polish. And I probably could have gotten away with one coat.

The dry time was phenomenal.  As I was working to complete my manicure I banged my fingernail against the table. With a slew of words that I won't repeat here I hurried to survey the damage. There wasn't even a dent! This was a wonderful surprise to me as normally banging my nail against something means I will have to start that nail over.

You can get this polish from BeautyPopShop.com for $16. BeautyPopShop is a jewel among the online stores. They sell Indie polishes and lip gloss as well as some amazing polish and makeup storage racks that lend style and fashion to you storage methods. I have ordered a polish rack and as soon as it arrives and is in its permanent location I will be sharing photos of it with you.

Let me share the swatches with you. I love this color as it is unlike any other that I own. The bottles are adorable with their wooden caps and the gorgeous gold imprint.

Score! A gorgeous set of Color Club at Ross

    Friday, September 21, 2012

While perusing the aisles at my local Ross I was looking through their nail polish selection (Well of course I was...) I didn't notice anything new right away and started to walk away. I noticed a set of something interesting buried under other polishes in the back corner of the bottom shelf. Well, I quickly unearthed that set and discovered it was Color Club. I simply adore Color Club polishes so I put it in my cart (actually I think it flew into my cart.) And of course I had to look for a few extra sets for some friends and luckily there was just the right number of sets. But I digress...

This set of Color Club is positively stunning. My only complaint with the Color Clubs at Ross is that they don't have the names on them. But at $7.99 for a set of five colors and a top coat you simply can't go wrong.

I was going to research the colors but I was too excited to share them with you. So if you know what any of these colors are please share. I will update this post as I discover the names.

Let me get to the swatches. These are two coats unless I state otherwise. The formula is great and the colors are mesmerizing.

This is a gorgeous, shimmery shade of teal blue. And if you have read any of my posts you know that I positively gravitate toward blue shades.

This glitter is stunning. A gorgeous shade of blue. Yes, it's blue... This is three coats.

This deep, vibrant purple is amazing. Lots of shimmer in this one too.

This deep red shade of red is wonderful - Shimmery and beautiful.

    Color Club Sexy Siren
    Sexy Siren

This polish was hard to capture. It looks silver but has an icy blue hue to it - gorgeous!

    Color Club Lumin-icent
    Lumin-icent

This deep wine shade is has almost a jelly type consistency. This is three coats.

Now I am on a mission to find the names of these stunning polishes.

    Happy polishing!

    Thursday, September 20, 2012

Milani asked some bloggers to use Milani polishes and participate in a promotion involving nail trends. I happily said yes. I love nail art and all things involving polish.

One of the nail trends was called "Gilded Rebel." My version of "Gilded Rebel" involved black cream polish, glitter. and more glitter. I used "Black Swift" for the base color and then using a cosmetic sponge I applied a gradient with "Silver Dazzle" and "Gold Glitz." I love gradients and this fun two-toned gradient is one of my favorites

    Milani - nail trends "Glamazon"

    Wednesday, September 19, 2012

Milani asked some bloggers to use Milani polishes and participate in a promotion involving nail trends. I happily said yes. I love nail art and all things involving polish.

One of the nail trends was called "Glamazon." My version of "Glamazon" involved glitter. and lots of glitter. I used "Silver Dazzle" for the base color and then using a nail art brush I added a diagonal line with "Gold Glitz." The on the outer tip of the diagonal line I applied "Teal." I used a cosmetic sponge to apply the glitter tip. It just seemed to give me a little more control.

Fall colors plus dots and stripes equal a sleek mani

    Tuesday, September 18, 2012

I love Spring colors but it is time for me to embrace Fall. Although it isn't quite time for sweaters and boots it is getting close. So I pulled out the Barielle Fall/Winter 2012 Collections and set my mind to create an appropriate manicure.

A base color of Barielle "One Shade of Gray" and a quick swipe on the side with "Soho at Night." Then using a striping brush I applied two strokes of "Greenwich Village." A dotting tool with "Greenwich Village" and "Soho at Night" completed the design. I topped it off with a top coat of Seche Vite Fast Dry Top Coat.

Digital Fashion Show reveals new gray for ICB in Spring 2013

    Sunday, September 16, 2012

With fashion week in full swing, Sally Hansen is once again bringing the latest nail color trends to the most sought after fashion collections  for the ultimate style collaboration. The brand's presence backstage --as well as online -- has enabled Sally Hansen to establish a legacy of setting color trends and bringing the latest innovations to the category.

This season, Sally Hansen has created an exclusive grey shade of the brand’s Complete Salon Manicure polish for ICB, a collection for Prabal Gurung for Spring 2013, which will be featured on the Digital Fashion Show platform. The nail look was applied by  leading nail expert and Sally Hansen Nail Ambassador TracyLee.

The Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure collection is not only on trend (the color is literally straight off the runway) but it is also an all-in-one formula that combines all the 5 steps of a professional salon manicure—a base coat, a strengthener, a growth treatment, rich color and a top coat—in a single multi-tasking polish.

    Fall leaves nail art

The weather is getting cooler and the air is crisper. The leaves on the trees are starting to turn. Soon we will take a drive through the mountains and see the Aspens and their glorious colors.

The idea of that made me want try to capture some of the Fall season with nail art. Mother Nature is hard to recreate though. I should have used some brighter colors but I do like how it turned out.

    Fall leaves nail art
    Fall leaves nail art
I used Hits Topazio for the base color. Then I drew the tree limbs and trunks with a black striping brush. Then using a nail art brush I drew the leaves (Just simple swipes of the brush). Zoya Colbie, and China Glaze Harvest Moon and Unplugged were the colors I used for the leaves.

I may have to do something like this for Halloween and try to make it spooky.
