Sally Hansen Salon Gel polish review

Wednesday, December 26, 2012

I have often wondered how the gel polish works. But since I change my polish practically every day I never got the chance to try it. I received a starter kit of the Sally Hansen Salon Gel polish to share with you.

I have to admit I was a bit nervous about trying this. But with instructions in hand I set out to find out how this polish applied. The polish was a pleasant surprise. It wasn't difficult to apply and I love the shade I tried. "Wine Not" is a gorgeous berry/wine shade. It has a gorgeous shimmer it and is a classy color. One lesson learned though is to definitely wrap the tips of your nails with the polish. I didn't do that and the edge of my nails are very obvious. But wrapping the tips will help with that.

From the SallyHansen.com website.

"Professional salon results at home have never been so easy. Saving you time and money. Up to 10 salon gel manicures at home & up to 2 week wear.
· Salon tested
· Safe
· No dry time & nails feel protected
· Easy removal

The LED lamp will cure (set) your manicure to a solid, high-gloss finish with zero dry time."

The starter kit contains the following:

· 1 LED Lamp
· 1 Gel Base Coat
· 1 Gel Nail Color
· 1 Gel Top Coat
· 10 Nail Cleanser Pads
· Acetone Remover
· Cuticle Stick
· File & Buffer
· Instruction sheet

The kit costs $70. But after the initial purchase of the kit you will only have to purchase additional colors of polish, the base or the top coat.

I started off by cleaning my nails with the nail cleanser wipes. That provides a good clean working surface on your nails.

Then I applied a thin coat of the base coat. I put my nails in the LED lamp for 30 seconds to cure the base coat. Timing is simple - put your fingertips in the slot on the light and turn it on. It automatically shuts off after 30 seconds. After you have cured the four fingers then cure your thumb in the light.

Then I applied a thin coat of the color Wine Not. Make sure to apply thin coats or the cure won't set correctly and bubbles can appear. Make sure to use the cuticle stick to remove any polish that gets on your skin before you cure though.

I then applied a second thin coat and repeated the process.

Apply a thin layer of the top coat and cure in the light again.

I am definitely pleased with the results. Removal was a breeze compared to what I had heard about gel polishes. Simply use the foil method and leave the foil on for about 15 minutes.

Now you may be asking how I am going to test the wear length of this polish as I change my polish frequently. It's simple! A dear friend is going to try it and leave the polish on to test the wear. I will have another blog post when she reports her results back to me.

This kit was provided to me for and honest review. All opinions are my own.

  1. How does it compare to the gel nails you get a salon? I used to do nails, my favorite was doing gel because of how easy it was to get a smooth nail. Not much, if any, filing. But will this protect your nails like the salon gel does??
If you have an extra UV lamp, can I have it?? LOL. Thanks for doing a review of this, I've been wondering about it for a while!

  3. So glad to see this review. I looked at this kit before Christmas but thought I would wait to see if all SH products went on sale - then was in that same store on Christmas eve and only 1 was left in the light pink. I have the first generation of lamps...the UV one that is only 1 yr old and I paid close to $100 just for that. So when all the LED lamps came out I wanted one but have not been able to justify it. Will be curious how the mani lasts. I have shorter nails (not nubbies) and it can be hard for me to get a good tip wrap with polish but know it does make my gels last longer. I also found that I can use any of my regular polishes and don't need to stick with only lamp cured ones long as I use the lamp cured top coat. Seems they last as long as the special polish ones do - so for me...it's all about the lamp and the gel top coat...kind of sad on that 'cause I so love the shine that SV gives me! I still do nails the old way often because I don't like to get the whole set up out. I often do my nails after I have gotten into bed for the night and am reading or watching TV so my lamp thing is not something to do in bed. Will look forward to your update. I thought this was a good value. So far nowhere I live has the black bottle SH gel polishes or base or top coats. Odd that the displays went in and yet none of the displays with the refill supplies are around in the 2 drugstores I have been in.
